Orthodontist Emergency Care

Occasionally, some patients will experience an injury to the mouth during treatment. Dental emergencies while wearing braces or other orthodontic appliances generally fall into two categories.

Occasionally, during orthodontic treatment, appliances such as brackets or wires may loosen or shift. While these situations are usually not urgent, they can be uncomfortable. If you notice a loose band, loose bracket, broken wire, or a wire poking your mouth, please contact Dr. Zoey Orthodontics during regular patient hours so we can schedule an appointment.

For the comfort of all patients, we’re unable to accommodate walk-in emergency visits. In the meantime, the tips below can help relieve discomfort until we see you.

  • If a tie wire is irritating your cheek or lips, place orthodontic wax over the area or gently tuck it under the archwire using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab.
  • A loose band or bracket can often stay in place temporarily. Please call our office when you notice the issue, and we’ll schedule a visit to repair or reattach the appliance if needed.
  • If an archwire is broken or poking, you may be able to gently bend it away using a pencil eraser or carefully clip it with clean nail clippers. If discomfort continues, contact our office for assistance.

Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth

If you or your child experiences a direct injury to the mouth or teeth, whether or not you are currently in orthodontic treatment, apply ice to the affected area right away and contact your family dentist as soon as possible. X-rays are often needed to evaluate the injury.

If a tooth has been knocked out, fractured, or displaced, your general dentist is best equipped to provide immediate care, as they may have the necessary materials or anesthesia. Once dental injuries have been addressed, Dr. Zoey Gutierrez-Nickel can adjust or replace any orthodontic appliances that were affected, based on comfort and healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orthodontic emergencies can feel stressful, especially if you’re not sure what’s normal and what needs immediate attention. These frequently asked questions are here to help patients and parents in Vero Beach feel prepared, informed, and confident when unexpected situations come up during treatment.

How do I know if my orthodontic issue is an emergency?

Most orthodontic issues are not true emergencies, even if they feel uncomfortable. If there is severe pain, swelling, or trauma to the teeth or jaw, it’s important to seek immediate care. Otherwise, many issues can be managed temporarily until your appointment.

In most cases, no. Orthodontic concerns like loose brackets or poking wires are not treated in the ER. However, if there is serious injury, bleeding that won’t stop, or trauma to the face or jaw, then emergency medical care may be necessary.

Mild discomfort is common during treatment, especially after adjustments. Over-the-counter pain relief, soft foods, and orthodontic wax can help. If the pain feels unusual or doesn’t improve, it’s always best to contact our office.

It’s best to stick to soft foods until the issue is repaired. Avoid anything hard, sticky, or crunchy that could make the problem worse or cause additional damage.

Sometimes minor delays can happen, especially if appliances are damaged or not working properly. Addressing issues early helps keep your treatment on track and prevents longer delays.
